The update to the 3.0 makes the decision tougher. Now the 3.0 has closed a little on performance and open up a bigger gap on how far you can travel on a tank of fuel. Also, the revised 3.0 has second generation piezzo and slightly more kw/litre and Nm/litre than the 4.2tdi. Perhaps the 4.2 will get the same update soon?

This is my first 3.0 TDI and it is a sweet motor. It really moves my big fat A8L so it would do even better in a much lighter car like the A5. I have a 2008 VW MKV GTI with the 2.0 TFSI motor (same as Audi). Bought it new in 2008, modded from stage 1 -> stage 2 -> stage 3 (from K03 to K04 turbo 335whp) -> Big turbo and built engine at 480whp.
