Games and other software often do these artificial limitations to create a problem that is usually solved with a paid service. You could use that on an already level 80 character just to get rid of it, but if you want to avoid the feeling of waste and have no character slots available, you'd have to buy a slot.
Bear in mind you can get equally good gear from lots of other places. Equipment in GW2 is pretty straight forward - all items with the same level requirement and rarity are equally good. So any level 80 exotics you get will be as good as the boost equipment, and if you get it from somewhere else you can choose the stats and save your boost.

It's highly recommended that you level up a character to 80 manually then using the boost on an alt. This is so that you learn important skills about the game, such as dodging and what your skills and traits do. That's a great place to start for builds for any classes and how you want to play them.
Couple of comments on the level 80 boost in your shared inventory slots - using it on a necro gives you gear with Rabid stats, using it on a thief gives you Valkyrie stats, all 7 other professions receive gear with Soldier's stats. The boost is always there, and lets me try how an 80 version feels, but its going to be overwhelming. But it gives you a great taste of what's to come.
